Getting Ready for "This Is My Story, This Is My Song"
As we prepare an experience of worship for our community, I am contemplating hymns, and all that they mean to us. Many of you have submitted stories about hymns that are deeply linked to your memories, your life events, and your walks of faith. As we worship through music on February 23, these holy moments will also endure.
For some people, it will be a day to look back on and say, "Do you remember when we sang 'Amazing Grace' at Gary Church with that powerful choir and orchestra?" They will draw upon the beauty of this memory for comfort and encouragement. Perhaps others will cling to "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" or "It Is Well with My Soul," and perhaps we will all hear something new in these treasured melodies and profound lyrics.
For younger listeners, this could be their first introduction to some of the greatest hymns of our tradition—the first time they have stepped into the river that links us with believers across time. They are learning the breadth and length of the community of Christ and finding their own place in this lineage. Our musicians are bringing their very best to make this introduction one they will never forget.
The great hymns deserve our loving attention, musically and spiritually. They draw our hearts to God and they draw us to one another in unity. Somehow, the musical and the spiritual are of one fabric when we bring our voices as well as our hearts into God's mighty gift of music. It is my great joy to lead a choir and orchestra that do precisely this!
We will have a "foretaste of glory divine" in this unforgettable time of worship at Gary Church on February 23. I hope you will be there!
