Welcome to Gary Church
If you are looking for a church where you can connect with others, share questions, and strengthen your faith, we invite you to come experience Gary Church. With deep roots in the community going back over 160 years, we continue to be an active, mission-oriented congregation seeking to share Christ’s love in the world. Wherever you are in your faith journey, there is a place for you and your whole family at Gary Church—a place to grow, to make a difference, and to build supportive relationships among caring and committed people.
What are the worship services like?
The Sunday morning service is traditional in style and includes readings, prayers, a sermon, vibrant music, and a children’s message. Because of safety restrictions, we currently have one in-person service at 9 a.m. limited to 50 pre-registered participants. The registration form is on the home page of this website. The service is livestreamed at 9, and a recording is available later in the morning on our website for those preferring to worship at home. (Prior to the pandemic, we had a second service at 11 a.m. as well and Sunday School for children, youth, and adults at 10 a.m. We hope to return to this schedule in the future when it is safe to do so.)
What should I wear?
On a Sunday morning you will see everything from suits to jeans, so feel free to wear what you find most comfortable.
Where is the church located?
We are located at 224 N. Main Street, just north of downtown Wheaton.
Where do I park?
The parking lot is on the west side of the building with designated visitor spaces available. If the lot is full, street parking is available to the west and east of the church. To the north, you may park in the Hultgren Funeral Home lot (unless signs indicate a funeral is in session) or Claire Woods Academy lot.
Where do I go from there?
You can enter through the west door (door #5) by the parking lot where greeters will welcome you. At this time, the Main Street or Seminary Street doors will be closed on Sunday mornings.
Is the building handicapped accessible?
Yes. The building including the main Sanctuary is accessible via the elevator located at the west entrance (door #5). Our small Chapel is accessible via a chair lift located on the lower level.
Where do my children go during worship?
Children are welcome in the Sanctuary with their families. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to safely offer Kids' Church nor nursery care at this time. A Children's Message will be included in the service which children will be able to see and hear from the pews. At-home resources for children will also be available by email. Contact the Church Office to receive these messages.
(Prior to the pandemic, at the 9 a.m. service, children ages three through
May I participate in Communion?
Yes. We believe God’s table is open to all and welcome everyone present to participate in Holy Communion. We typically celebrate Communion on the first Sunday of the month, however the schedule will be different during the pandemic. We have been offering "Drive-In Communion" in the parking lot.
Do I have to be a member to participate in classes or programs?
No. Everyone is welcome to worship at Gary Church (online or in person by registering on the home page of the website) and participate in our many activities. Due to the pandemic, we are offering classes and events in various formats, some on Zoom and some small in-person gatherings. You will find many opportunities on the Gary Kids, Gary Youth, Adult Study, Music Ministries, and Mission and Outreach pages of this website.
