Religion in Ancient Rome and the Problem with Christians

Meet in the Chapel Pick your favorite inspirational classic religious movie: The Robe? Quo Vadis? Ben Hur? Hollywood has given us a pretty clear picture of what life was like for Christians living in pagan ancient Rome. But is that picture really accurate? (Hint. Remember Charlton Heston as a galley slave in Ben Hur? By and large the Romans did not have galley slaves. Galleys, yes. Slaves rowing the galleys, not so much.) So, what is the truth? To understand what happened, we must first understand what religion was like in ancient Rome before Christianity. Was paganism really that far removed from this new so-called Christianity? Was a collision with established Roman society really inevitable? What did the Romans really think about the Christians? Lions? Really? These are some of the issues that will be addressed in this presentation.
